Brenda was born and raised in southern Saskatchewan. At the age of 12 years, she developed rheumatoid arthritis and was confined to a wheelchair for six years, during which time she took up oil painting. Her painting was put on hold while she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and her Masters Degree in Audiology. In 1998, after trying pottery for 5 years, she took a watercolour class and fell in love with it. Brenda has always had a deep love and respect for nature, so it was natural for her to begin dabbling in wildlife art. While she enjoys painting all manner of wildlife, her main interest is big cats and wolves. Brenda is fascinated by their eyes, the way they move, and their intelligence. She tries to convey the beauty, majesty, and intelligence of all her subjects in her paintings. She paints in watercolour and gouache in a non-traditional manner. She has become known for her unique painting style, which emphasizes the patterns of the hair tracts to give a 3-D appearance to the animal. Brenda’s hope is that her artwork will pull the viewer in to feel the same awe and fascination that she does when she see these wonderful creatures in person. Brenda’s art has won numerous awards at the Reflection of Nature Show. Her painting “African Crowned Crane” won Best of Show in the Open Level in 2007. While Brenda is not a prolific painter, creating only three to four paintings a year because of other responsibilities which prevent her from devoting more time to it, most of her paintings have been purchased and now grace the homes of many private collectors.
